Kojima Backs PS3, Says It's Like a "Movie Theater"

When I saw this headline, I was like, "eh", however his comments are pretty interesting (as well as abstract). The majority of game developers I interviewed at E3 had very little to say about the differences in the final product of a game that is developed for both the PS3 and the 360. In Kojima's comments he likens the PS3 to a movie theater, while the 360 is more of a DVD player. So yay for Sony but how many of us really invested in a home theater system? You can either try to create demand for a product that consumers have already shunned due to exorbitant costs, or you can provide a solution that they actually want. Of course Sony's MO is to do the former (hello UMD). From the article:
"The PS3 is a movie theater. You pay 1,800 yen and view a movie with great sound and a huge image. These aren't movies that are remade directly from television, but video that's been made for the movies, and everyone comes wanting that. Xbox 360 is watching a DVD at home. It's for people who want to watch a movie, but anything is okay. The Wii is a television program. You turn on the television, and you can watch soccer or watch a variety show -- enjoy a program lightly," he said."

How dedicated are community members?

When chatting in IRC with one of the Frag Doll community members about whether or not he would join the military, I expressed my concerns, and he replied...

" Meh war is war, but if I joined I would baisicaly disappear from the community"

Now that is dedication. He is not worried about war, but missing an IRC chat is something of a concern.

The 10 Most Influential Video Gamers Of All Time

Do gamers matter?
Over three decades of video game history, joystick genealogists have debated the impact of top-10 video games and 10-best game designers. They have discussed the five coolest first-person-shooters and the five worst 3D-fighting games. They have argued the relative merits and impact of various controllers, consoles and characters.

In short, they've rated everything except the players.

Topping the list? My internet boyfriends:
"he Advocates: Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins. If there's one thing game-playing generates, it's vociferous opinion about all that is right with games — and so much of what is wrong. Most of that group-grumbling has no clear effect, but that's not the case for Washington state's Krahulik and Holkins. Eight years ago, the two friends created the online comic strip Penny Arcade and began merrily skewering all that was wrong with games. They developed an online following of millions and have become proven tastemakers, even on a Web that is cluttered with gamer opinion. They do exert some influence — like last year when they cowed "World of Warcraft" publisher Blizzard Entertainment into an apologetic interview regarding that game's early troubles. But more importantly, they have become the closest the medium has to leaders of a gamers' movement, going so far, a couple of years back, to launch [the equivalent of] an annual E3 for gamers, the Penny Arcade Expo."

Postmortem: Indigo Prohecy and telling a new story

Gamasutra has posted a postmortem on one of my favorite games of 2005, Indigo Prophecy. My Yahoo! Reset co-host, Raymond, was a big fan of the game, but for some reason it took me forever to pick up. Once I did, I was hooked. In Indigo Prophecy, you play both sides of the story: the cops who are investigating the crime, and the man who has been charged with murder. It takes a new approach to story telling allowing you to be part of the movie-like sequences through choreographed thumbstick movements that help the hero dodge attacks, fight spirits, or simply make a decision in a "choose your own adventure" type structure. In the end, you are left with a captivating story with several different endings that begs to be played again and again.
"One of the key points in Indigo Prophecy was the idea of getting interactivity and narration to work together. Most games oppose these two concepts or rather, they develop them in turn: a cut scene to advance the narration, then an action scene, then another cut scene for the narration. The structure of this narrative process is very close to that of porn movies."

Rehab for Gamers

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (June 9) - An addiction center is opening Europe's first detox clinic for game addicts, offering in-house treatment for people who can't leave their joysticks alone.
Video games may look innocent, but they can be as addictive as gambling or drugs - and just as hard to kick, says Keith Bakker, director of Amsterdam-based Smith & Jones Addiction Consultants.
