Give them a hand...

You have to give it to Nintendo. They have some messed up people in their marketing department, the kind of people I wished I worked with. In a new contest, they will send you a severed mannequin hand -- you make a mini film staring the prop and you might win a DS.
"What do you like to touch? Sand, silk, snot? Ever notice how real life can sometimes look like a game? Grab a camera (and a mannequin hand), create something cool and enter our contest. Who knows, you might even make it into the Gallery"

New WoW Races, Continent Coming

"Blizzard may be showing off World of Warcraft: Northrend at E3 this year. The expansion is said to add new player races and a new continent for exploration. Most of the expansion will be geared toward the higher level players, with bigger dungeons and a slew of new high-end quests and power items. None of this is confirmed, of course"

Well of course they are going to be showing an Expansion Pack at E3. You didn't think we would actually be seeing Starcraft Ghost did you?

AIM of the week

"kathunter: who people are at the core is something that we can promise to change, but the reality is that our naked person is in the real world every day, and you either take it or leave it."

We have the details and (approx) release dates for the new multiplayer maps, and there will be nine, count them, nine released."
  • We're releasing a total of nine new multiplayer maps.
  • All nine maps will eventually be available as Live downloads and as a normal boxed game disc - available at retail for $19.99 (US).
  • The release on Live will be staggered, some paid, some free!
  • The first two maps are free and coming in a few short weeks. (late April)
  • The same day the 2 free maps are released, 2 additional maps will be available for purchase.
  • The remaining 5 maps will be made available as a paid download on the same day the retail package goes on sale.
  • The retail disc will contain extras, including a documentary, a cool project from our cinematic and animation team, every Halo 2 update released so far and possily one or two other little treats.
  • By late summer, ALL the maps will be available for free."

hahahahahaha

Well today was a first... Ya know people say the FDs get the game early, we have a special coach inside Ubi who teaches us how to hold the mystical XBox controller, but the truth is, we almsot always get the game a week after everyone else, and well, the kids over there are playing WoW as well, so they don't have time for any "tips".
So I am signing off for a day of Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. There goes the weekend.

Spinter Cell: Holy Shit

There is actually a fantastic write up of Chaos Theory on Penny Arcade. Last weekend the Frag Ladies, Penny Arcade and a few other groups got together for a preview competition. Skip past Tyco's PSP entry to find Gabe's preview.
"The single player campaign is exactly what you'd expect from a Splinter Cell game. You sneak up on the guy and you give him the snappy snap. The thing about Chaos Theory is that your jaw will be on the floor the entire time you play it. I'm just about through the third level now and I just cannot believe what I'm seeing. These are the sorts of graphics I expected to see in the next generation of consoles. I had no idea the Xbox was capable of this sort of thing."

Sean: By the way, Mercenaries RULES.
Sean: Every five minutes something awesome happens like I'll steal someone's anti-air tank and drive it off a cliff then dive out as it explodes into a barricade of chinaman jeeps.

gus: Thermal adhesive is not the same thing as thermal compound
gus: I found out the "wasting $500" way
gus: I thought I could use it between my new cpu and heatsink
gus: Instead of helping to cool it, it permanently bonded the components
kathunter: omg
gus: It was like crazy gluing my cpu and heatsink together
gus: They sold the fucking adhesive right next to the paste!!!!
gus: THE GOD DAMNED NAMES ARE EVEN SIMILAR!
gus: Such a stupid thing to do
kathunter: i think they were trying to trick you
kathunter: some prick making $5.95 an hour was stocking the isles and thought.. you know, someone might actually be dumb enough to try this
gus: I blame the jews
gus: I have no proof but I know they are behind this
kathunter: that is always a safe bet
gus: Zionist conspiracy

GDC - after the flame

This GDC was a strange one for me. Last year I didn't have any assignments and simply dragged on the coat tails of Hammer while we appropriately dodged meetings and played hang-man through the keynotes of some of our respective game idols. It was pretty much a perfect week. And I remember coming back totally pumped from learning more of where our industry had spawned from (not necessarily where it was going), but none the less, happy as hell to be part of this stealth Katamari running through the entertainment budgets of millions.

Last week, I was just too tired to care. I still had a fantastic week, don't get me wrong, but I found myself in the press room downloading keynotes alone instead of getting up early for the 9ams (and damn everyone of you who won one of those thousand HDTVs at the Xbox keynote simply because you are a freakin morning person).

Part of the reason this year was so odd for me was running around with a mike instead of a pen for a change. I offered to do a day of coverage for a web site just getting off the ground. The kids there had never been to GDC, and I had never tried video journalism so we were all flying by the seats of our pants. As much as I hate to admit it, the money is much easier, and it was a nice break from the usual pressure. I am way too old to get use to it, but it wasn’t so bad leaving the show with nothing more than a hangover and a check rather than 5 stories assignments about some video card the company won't even loan me to preview or a PSP game that we played over a month ago.

One of the talks I will never forgive myself for missing was Will Wright’s preview of Spores which is becoming a Fable of the game gossip it seems. Cranky was staying with me over the week, and his comment was simply that Will was actually God. He may in fact be correct. If any human were to be given the title, who else but the creator of Sim City to take the honor? At least he knows how the shit works. I am also sad to have missed the talked on sexuality in gaming, but I will leave that for another post.

For me, the week was mainly about people. All the new team writing for Gamegirladvance was actually in one city, Justin, Corinna were here for the awards, I finally met CliffyB (who I am pretty sure has the hots for seanbaby), Bentllama was in town and I did a sit down interview with him that was scrapped due to background noise, I had spontaneous karaoke in a cab with Raymond that is too fucking weird for you to even believe, but the highlight for me was to finally have the chance to spend time with Zoe Flower who’s work I enjoy, but more importantly admire as a person. Oh wait, that was actually a tie with the night I spent with Nicole and Heather, two female game developers from Ubisoft Montreal – but there will be more on that later at E3. You better practice up ladies ;)

OK, that is my empty download. I don't have many photos from the week since my camera is so huge, but thanks to Kholer, I do have some shots from the after party the night the "Walk-of-Game" was officially opened at the Metreon. The "Walk of Game", the gaming version of Hollywood's Walk of Fame, now contains stars for Atari co-founder Nolan Bushnell, the creator of "Pong", and Shigeru Miyamoto, the "Donkey Kong" creator, as well as Halo, Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog (who I totally made out with afterwards in the green room).

AIM moment of the day

PeterSam: however, it's better to want than to have
kathunter: interesting statement
kathunter: why do you say that
PeterSam: whenever i get something I want, it depreses me cause that means I have to find something else to want
kathunter: I guess wanting is pretty damn fantastic
PeterSam: spock said in one of the star trek movies
PeterSam: always stuck with me
PeterSam: yeah, having sucks
kathunter: I should rewatch those. Maybe life would be a tad more clear

Game Developer Conference underway

This is my favorite time of year. Better than E3 even. It is a chance for everyone to hang out together and actually talk. People are too busy or too important when we are in LA, but since the retailers are no where to be found, GDC ends up being very low key and accessible. However I am a tad stressed by the time management problem I am running into this week.
Frag Dolls just started playing Brothers in Arms (which by the way is an amazing single player game), so between now and Wednesday, I need to get in 6 hours of Splinter Cell, 8 hours of BiA, finish an information architecture project for another company, review X-Men for NGage, spend a few hours in the Forums, clean my room before Cranky gets in town, dinner with two friends, prepare for 4 interviews, write two columns and get my warrior to level 20.
I am taking applications for personal assistants.

KoTOR Content Cut?

"Well, I just finished the game for the first time, and the cut sound file thread intrigued me, so I dug through dialog.tlk. There's a scene with Atton being tortured by Sion, followed by him confessing his love to the female PC while he's dying, the PC talking to Handmaiden about how he has to go, but she needs to stay behind and train the Jedi, and some stuff where Kreia fights (and apparently easily kills) your party members who have come to challenge her (including Handmaiden and Atton). I am depressed that this was cut out - I suppose it's because they wanted to leave the game more open-ended, and that it'd be worse if the party members are actually all killed off, but at least there's some *closure.* I was utterly depressed that none of my party members even talked to me about the coming battle as I left to fight Kreia!" Required Reading - Bragging on my boy

I have to brag a little on my boy here. The awards for best game writer are still underway, but Sean had a great nod...
"We promise to leave a space open for EGM's SeanBaby, however, who, in the opinion of this column and several nominators, has the most consistently unique voice of any writer currently working on a major pub. His half-baked rants on awful games are a welcome oasis from the frustrating sameness we endure in the enthusiast press on a monthly basis. "
