Kojima Backs PS3, Says It's Like a "Movie Theater"
When I saw this headline, I was like, "eh", however his comments are pretty interesting (as well as abstract). The majority of game developers I interviewed at E3 had very little to say about the differences in the final product of a game that is developed for both the PS3 and the 360. In Kojima's comments he likens the PS3 to a movie theater, while the 360 is more of a DVD player. So yay for Sony but how many of us really invested in a home theater system? You can either try to create demand for a product that consumers have already shunned due to exorbitant costs, or you can provide a solution that they actually want. Of course Sony's MO is to do the former (hello UMD). From the article:
"The PS3 is a movie theater. You pay 1,800 yen and view a movie with great sound and a huge image. These aren't movies that are remade directly from television, but video that's been made for the movies, and everyone comes wanting that. Xbox 360 is watching a DVD at home. It's for people who want to watch a movie, but anything is okay. The Wii is a television program. You turn on the television, and you can watch soccer or watch a variety show -- enjoy a program lightly," he said."[via: GameDaily BIZ

sony is bringing on a headache, maybe nintendo has it right, keeping it simple.. just play games. microsoft has the cross pollination of console, and p.c. mastered for 2 generations now. sony looks like it has lost, the cool factor it built. know it has the WTF!! factor.

Hmm, the PS3 is a movie theater experience. Interesting commentary.
There's a snide remark somewhere in there that has something to do with the percentage of the audience that will opt for the 'DVD rental', i.e. the XBox 360, over the overpriced 'Movie theater ticket' - the PS3. But I can't quite find the words.
The metaphor falls apart when, as you mentioned, the visual quality differences between the two systems is nil and dependent completely on the type of display they are running on.
They can both be movie quality experiences on a 40" HDTV screen, or they can be shitty experiences on your 19" cathode ray dinosaur.
Thankfully, with rental places like gamefly and blockbuster, you don't have to opt for one or the other. Well you do. But you don't have to miss out on any MGS fun if your choice happens to be the 360.
