(GT)4 is the lonliest number
"Representatives from Sony and second party developer Polyphony Digital have announced at a press conference in Tokyo that Gran Turismo 4 will be released in Japan on 3rd December and the U.S. and Europe on 14th December, allaying fears that the game would be delayed into next year.[via Gamasutra - News]
However, the company also announced that the much-anticipated online mode for the game has been removed from this iteration of the title. This is something of a shock to many, considering the online mode was one of the most important unique selling points for the game compared to Gran Turismo 3."
Ok, so we have all heard by now that the Gran Turismo series will not offer an online title until next year. Here is my question. Should they have delayed the game until they were able to offer the online portion? Will you buy it anyway?

The title is already a year late technology-wise IMO, so after hearing this news I'm inclined to decline ;) I've been enjoying the hyper-realism of Burnout so much that I'm not really missing those 200 lap races of GT.

They probably will have online play in the PSP version. Or the PS3 version they are showing at next year's E3. Maybe it would've used the hard drive which the new PS2 won't get any more and they're figuring out something different now? Oh, and I still won't buy it ... too many Jump'n'Runs and RPGs in the house waiting to be played.
P.S.: Hyper*realism* of Burnout, hehe. ;)

I'm getting it. Not on launch, but I'm still getting it. Honestly, if you're a "guy," and sifting through the 7/3 pics of every car in Sony's GT4 press CD doesn't give you an instantaneous woody, then I honestly don't know what will.
But still, the lack of online play in GT4 shouldn't even be an issue for its intended audience, since any educated gamer who wants a straight-up arcade style multiplayer racing game should already know to look elsewhere. The only thing that disappoints me is the inability to trade cars over the net, which is something that Polyphony should really consider implementing.

FORZA will have XBOX LIVE! GT4 eat your heart out!
[I hate racing games, yet I even concur that having NO online component just sucks...]

i'm not a fan of the sim racers...too real and unfun for me. i guess that goes hand in hand with me not being much of a car guy either.
>inability to trade cars over the net
hmmm, they could take it one step further and magic-fy / pokemonize it. you lose a race, you lose your car or lose a car part.

Well, the PS2 online network isn't exactly the drawing factor to the PS2 itself, so lacking online play doesn't hurt that way. HOWEVER, considering that Burnout 3 has it in spades, and the likes of Outrun 2 and Forza will also pack it, it does hurt that way.
I'll still get it either way. Unless it's 98 percent again.

I've been anticipating this one for way too long. The fact that B-mode and Photo Mode look that good on year 2000 hardware is pretty impressive. And I'm a sucker for a game that includes cars from the 1800s.

I cannot understand why Burnout 3 gets so much attention in comparison to GT series...
This will be a work w/o equal or passing. GT3 hasn't been surpassed yet...
It is truly great that game players can taste the quality of GT series. If they only knew how massochistic the team was while developing they could more deeply appreciate it this work. It is rare great quality is recognized and so appropriately marketed.
Gran Tourismo & Metal Gear series are the pinnacles of Playstation Production Values.

The only reason I could compare Burnout 3 to Gran Turismo 4 is pretty much just basic visceral racing joy. Yeah, GT4 plays out to a different kind of tune than the destructive Burnout series, but they both try to present some kind of hyper-realism look, while GT4 takes a more realism-based touch and Burnout 3 takes its arcade route. But I love Burnout 3, and, yes, I'll play GT4, but it'll probably take a miracle to knock it out of my PS2. :)
